JoSAA Opening Rank 2026, College & Category Wise Cutoff

Opening Rank is defined as the best (lowest) rank at which an offer was made in a particular JoSAA counselling round for a particular institution, course, category, and quota. For popular courses like CSE at IIT Bombay, the opening rank in Round 1 is always AIR 1, because the highest-ranked candidates in JEE Advanced get selected first into these courses.

Closing Rank is the last (highest) rank at which a seat is allocated in that same institute-course-category group. This number is crucial for applicants, because this tells us about the actual cut-off for admission. If your rank is the same as or better than the closing rank, then you were eligible for admission. JoSAA 2026 includes 138 participating institutes, categorized into four types. Admission will be done either on the basis of JEE Advanced AIR or JEE Main CRL, depending on the category of institute.

Note: IISc Bengaluru takes part in the JoSAA counselling process, along with the other 23 IITs. Admissions to all these institutions take place through JEE Advanced AIR, thereby totalling up to 24 institutions that admit JEE Advanced qualified students. IIEST Shibpur is one among the 56 GFTIs taking part in the JoSAA 2026.

Key Differences Between Institute Types

• IITs and IISc Bengaluru: Admission will be based on JEE Advanced Rank 2026 only. Only those candidates who qualify for JEE Advanced 2026 will be eligible.

• NITs, IIITs & GFTIs: Selection will be made on the basis of JEE Main 2026 ranks. JEE Advanced qualifying rank is not required.

• NIT Admissions: Two separate cut-offs will be announced by NITs; one for the ‘Home State (HS)' & the other for the 'Other State (OS)' quota.

• IIIT Hyderabad: This institution does not take part in JoSAA counselling. The candidate has to separately apply for IIIT Hyderabad through its official process.

JoSAA releases individual Opening and Closing Rank (OR-CR) figures for each of the reservations as well as types of seats. The cut-off ranks differ among reservations, thereby providing a better understanding to the students about their chances.

Important Points to Remember

• JoSAA follows the category ranks for seat allocation in categories like EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, and PwD, and not the CRL.

• The category rank of a student tends to be significantly superior to that of the CRL rank of the same student and helps increase chances of getting admission into better colleges and courses.

• Before comparing the cut-offs, one must always verify their category rank on the JEE score card.

• Comparing the Open category cut-offs gives an inaccurate estimation of one’s chances of getting admission as a reserved category student.

Gender-Neutral and Female-Only Seats

JoSAA also publishes separate cutoff lists for the following:

• Gender-Neutral (GN) Seats – Open to all eligible candidates.

• Female-Only (FO) Seats – Reserved exclusively for female candidates.

Female candidates may apply for both Gender-Neutral Seats and Female Seats, thereby providing them with multiple ways to get admissions. For instance, in most cases, the cutoff marks required for applying for female seats are relatively easy compared to other seats in the same institution/branch. Knowledge of cutoff marks according to different categories and seats will enable candidates to make wise choices during counselling and choice filling.

IIT admissions are done using the rank obtained in JEE Advanced 2026 through the JoSAA counseling process. In all engineering branches, Computer Science Engineering (CSE) remains the most popular branch as the rankers prefer it among other branches. Admission into the National Institutes of Technology (NITs) takes place on the basis of the JEE Main 2026 Common Rank List (CRL). For all undergraduate courses, the most competitive discipline is that of Computer Science Engineering (CSE), especially when considering the top NITs.
