The admission process for BTech courses in all 23 IITs is done via JEE Advanced rank, followed by JoSAA counseling. Firstly, students need to clear JEE Advanced through JEE Main and then undergo counseling to ensure admission. Below are the instructions for how to get admission to IIT in 2026.
IITs provide undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorate programs in engineering, science, architecture, management, and other areas of studies. Course offerings and entry qualifications differ from one institution to another and from department to department. Applicants need to be qualified for the entrance exam and be eligible for a particular program. The table below shows major courses provided by IITs and their admission pathways.
| Course Level | Programmes Offered | Entrance Exam / Admission Route |
| Undergraduate | BTech, BArch, BS, dual-degree programmes such as BTech + MTech | JEE Advanced; BArch applicants must also qualify for the Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT) |
| Postgraduate (Engineering) | MTech, selected MS programmes | GATE; admission through institute-specific processes, COAP or CCMT where applicable |
| Postgraduate (Science) | MSc, Joint MSc-PhD programmes at selected IITs | IIT JAM and institute-specific admission procedures |
| Management | MBA and selected management programmes | CAT, followed by institute-specific selection rounds |
| Research | PhD and selected MS by Research programmes | Institute-specific tests, GATE, NET or other accepted qualifications, followed by interviews where applicable |
Number of BTech seats at various IITs is dependent on the approved intake of individual institutes and seat allocation policy for the academic year. JoSAA will be implementing the Government of India's reservation policy in the eligible category, which includes SC, ST, OBC-NCL and EWS applicants. 5% horizontal reservation is applicable to disabled aspirants, as per the existing policy. There are also supernumerary seats for girls at IITs as per the girl enrollment policy.

IIT BTech courses fees includes tuition fee, hostel fee, mess fee, and other educational fees. The total cost differs according to institutes and the amount of payable fees also depends upon the category of the student as well as his/her family income. For the academic year 2026-27, the fee structure of various IITs can be found from the institute profile provided officially by JoSAA. The fee structure of an IIT includes the annual tuition fee of ₹1 lakh for General, OBC-NCL and EWS categories with family income above ₹5 lakh. However, SC, ST and PwD categories have been exempted completely from the annual tuition fee.
The older IITs have more experience in academics, established networks of alumni and industry linkages. The newer IITs too are setting up their research facilities, infrastructure and placements. The correct option will depend upon your choice of branch, future career plans, your JEE Advanced score and the prospects in each college.
