CMAT percentile score is calculated from the scaled score, not directly from the raw marks. Since the exam is held in two sessions, NTA normalises the raw scores using a standard formula to make sure that the difficulty level of both sessions does not affect any candidate unfairly.
After normalisation, the percentile is calculated based on a candidate’s rank compared to the total number of candidates who appeared for CMAT.
Percentile (P) = 100 × (Number of candidates with raw marks equal to or less than the candidate) / (Total number of candidates who appeared)
Example:
If 10,000 candidates appeared for CMAT and one candidate scores the highest marks (350/400), their rank will be 1.
Percentile = 100 × 9,999 / 10,000 = 99.99
CMAT rank can also be calculated with this formula:
(10,000 – 1) / 10,000 × 100 = 99.99
If two or more candidates get the same score, they will receive the same rank. However, their names will appear in alphabetical order on the rank list. The next rank will be adjusted accordingly.
Example: If three candidates share Rank 25, the next candidate will get Rank 28.
After CMAT results are announced, candidates must apply separately to the MBA colleges that accept CMAT scores. Since CMAT does not have a centralised counselling process, every candidate has to fill out individual applications for the institutes they wish to join. To do this, candidates should first check the list of CMAT-accepting colleges in India.
Most MBA colleges use a Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interview (PI) to shortlist candidates for admission. Some B-schools conduct a Written Ability Test (WAT) instead of GD. Know about the major steps that is held after CMAT result 2025.
In a GD, candidates are divided into groups of 8–10 and given a topic to discuss. Moderators observe the discussion and score each participant. GD topics are normally related to business, the economy, technology, or current affairs.
In the PI round, candidates are evaluated on their confidence, communication skills, subject knowledge, and problem-solving ability. The panel usually asks questions about the candidate’s education, interests, and career goals. Final admission depends on performance in all the rounds.
In the WAT, candidates have to write a short essay on a given topic. Through this test, the panel checks the candidate’s writing skills, clarity of thought, knowledge, and ability to express opinions effectively.
CMAT cut offs for most colleges fall in the moderate range, while only a few top institutes like JBIMS Mumbai and SIMSREE require very high cut offs above the 99 percentile. Candidates scoring between 85–95 percentile in CMAT can secure admission to many reputed B-schools. A score in the 60–70 percentile range generally helps candidates get into Tier 2 colleges. Below are the expected CMAT 2025 cut-off percentiles for MBA admissions.
