NITs have academic standards similar to those of IITs but have a larger pool of seats and a lower cut-off. They are also considered Tier 1 engineering institutions, and some of the best NITs boast better placements than some of the new IITs. The only non-IIT to make it to the Top 10 of engineering for 2025 NIRF was NIT Trichy.
Students choose NITs for these reasons:
NITs started out as Regional Engineering Colleges (RECs) which were established together by both the central and state governments in the 1950s. The NIT Warangal has been termed as the first NIT of the total of 31 NITs operating since 1959. The NIT Surathkal started off in 1960 as the Karnataka Regional Engineering College. However, in the early 2000s, the RECs were elevated to become NITs and were taken over by the central government and later the Act of 2007 termed the NITs as Institutes of National Importance. Another batch of NITs was opened in the following years after 2010.
