GATE 2026 exam pattern needs to be understood by students for effective exam preparation. The exam is a Computer-Based Test (CBT) which lasts for 180 minutes.
General Aptitude (GA): 15 marks (Compulsory for all).
Engineering Mathematics: 13 marks (For most papers).
Subject-Specific Section: 72 marks.
Total Questions: 65 (10 GA + 55 Subject).
Total Marks: 100.
Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ): One correct option out of four.
Multiple Select Questions (MSQ): One or more correct options. No negative marks.
The Numerical Answer Type (NAT) requires a numeric answer which has no negative scoring system.
1-mark MCQ: 1/3 mark deduction for wrong answers.
2-mark MCQ: 2/3 mark deduction for wrong answers.
