JEE Main Marks Vs Percentile

National Testing Agency uses a session-wise percentile system to make sure the exam is fair for candidates appearing in different shifts. Here’s the same process explained simply, with examples:

Step 1: Session-wise comparison
Each exam shift is evaluated separately. Suppose CMAT has Shift 1 and Shift 2. If the highest raw score in Shift 1 is 320, that candidate gets 100 percentile in Shift 1, even if the highest score in Shift 2 is different.

All other candidates in that shift are compared only with those who took the same session.

Step 2: Percentile calculation with example
Your percentile shows how many candidates performed below or equal to you in your shift.
For example, if 8,700 out of 10,000 candidates in your session scored the same or less than you, your percentile will be:
(8,700 ÷ 10,000) × 100 = 87 percentile.

Step 3: Seven-decimal precision
NTA calculates percentile up to seven decimal places to avoid this.
So instead of 93.10, your score may appear as 93.1023262, helping distinguish closely ranked candidates accurately.
