CAT percentile gives candidates an idea of how well they did relative to other people. In CAT 2025, raw scores for each candidate will be calculated based on the official marking scheme. The raw scores of all candidates will then be converted to a normal score (the normalized or scaled CAT score) that will be used to determine their final percentiles. CAT 2025 percentile calculation involves three main steps:
Scores are assigned based on correct and incorrect responses: +3 for each correct answer and -1 for every incorrect attempt.
Section-wise and overall raw scores are computed.
These raw scores are normalized to generate the scaled CAT score, which is then converted into percentiles shown on the CAT scorecard.

IIMs do not announce the CAT cut-off marks on public forums. However, candidates can determine the approximate CAT cut-off scores by looking at the past years’ trends for admission, as well as the percentiles for candidates that were shortlisted. In general, when it comes to the top 5 IIMs, we expect that the minimum CAT cut-off scores will usually be at least approximately a score of 95-100 percentile based on the applicant's respective categories. The table below provides historical-based minimum estimated percentiles. The actual CAT 2025 cut-offs may be higher or lower than these. Please refer to this table for anticipated CAT cutoffs.

CAT exam is conducted in three distinct windows of time, each with its own unique set of questions. Because each of these windows may have different levels of difficulty associated with it, the exam governing body uses a system referred to as "score normalization" to provide an equitable scoring environment for all candidates. In this way, the examiners will be able to adjust every candidate's scores evenly so that they do not gain any unfair advantage based on the level of difficulty of their particular question set. The process of normalisation uses a number of different parameters in order to achieve this goal.
Highest Score
Lowest Score
Average Score
Median Score
Top 10%
Bottom 10%
Scores from all three CAT windows will be converted to "normalised scores" before percentiles are calculated based on these normalised scores. The process of score normalisation will employ the GATE testing model and will be based on a set of statistical equations.
When CAT 2025 is released, the shortlisting process for personal interviews will start. Both IIMs and Non-IIMs have their own separate selection processes, which will include the Written Ability Test and the Personal Interview. Candidates will be shortlisted based on their CAT 2025 score and academics.
Candidates must complete the PI shortlisting form on each institute's official website by their respective deadline if they have fulfilled the minimum CAT cut-off. Class 10 and Class 12 will also be considered during the PI shortlisting process.
After this, the institutes release their WAT/PI shortlist. For CAT 2025, the IIMs are expected to announce the MBA/PGP shortlist in January 2026, conduct PI rounds in March-April, and declare final admission results by May 2026.
The IIM admission process occurs in three stages.
Initial screening based on your CAT score and academic achievement.
Written Ability Test and Personal Interview rounds.
Final merit list and admission offer selection.
The admission process of the IIMs happens individually for the Top IIMs and for the nine New IIMs, the admission process happens through the Common Admission Process (IIM CAP).
MBA Admission Through CAT: Other Top B-Schools
The application guidelines for other major business schools are quite similar. Candidates typically complete WAT and PI rounds after being selected through a WAT and PI round process. Each institution will establish its own CAT cutoffs, and applicants must complete individualized applications for any non-IIM institutions they wish to apply to. Most top MBA colleges open applications in August, so candidates should keep track of deadlines for their preferred institutions.

The CAT qualifying cut-off is the minimum score a candidate needs to be considered for the WAT–PI round. If a candidate scores equal to or above this cut-off, they are eligible to apply for the IIM PI round, but this does not guarantee selection.
The qualifying cut-off is usually much lower than the final cut-off. The final cut-off is the actual score used to shortlist candidates for the PI round. For example, at IIM Bangalore, the qualifying CAT cut-off is around 80 percentile, but the final cut-off for getting shortlisted is much higher, around 99.95 percentile or more.
