CAT syllabus 2026 consists of three parts i.e., Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension (VARC), Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR), and Quantitative Aptitude (QA). CAT exam evaluates aspirants on their knowledge of the English language, reading skill, logical reasoning, data interpretation, problem-solving skills, and numerical ability. VARC is concerned with the comprehension of English and reading skill whereas DILR emphasizes logical and analytical abilities while QA covers basic mathematical understanding and computation. Aspirants for CAT 2026 must learn the entire syllabus of all these three subjects.
CAT exam syllabus is broad and needs to be planned strategically for timely completion. Those who are preparing for CAT 2026, should first get familiar with what is needed in the exam syllabus and start preparing accordingly. CAT 2026 syllabus involves many topics and sub-topics. The aspirants should try to cover all the topics present in CAT syllabus but the primary concentration should be on important topics only. See the following table for sectional weightage.

The CAT VARC section is the first section of the CAT question paper and it contains 24 questions. this section has two parts one of them is Verbal Abilty (VA) and another one is Reading comphrehension (RC) The section mainly test candidtaes reading comphrehension language and reasoning skills.
Reading comprehension carries the highest share of questions while verbal ability includes topics such as parajumbles , odd sentences and para summaries. The overall difficulty of VARC can be goes to easy to difficult. The table below shows the expected topic wise distribution and difficulty level based on the CAT 2025 question paper.
| VARC Topics for CAT | No. of Questions | Difficulty Level |
|---|---|---|
| Reading Comprehension | 16 | Moderate to Difficult |
| VA – Parajumbles | 3 | Moderate to Difficult |
| VA – Odd Sentence | 2 | Easy to Moderate |
| VA – Summary | 3 | Easy to Moderate |
| Overall | 24 | Moderate to Difficult |
Reading Comprehension forms about two-thirds of CAT VARC section. Four to five Reading Comprehensions with 12-14 questions each can be expected by candidates. Passages on various topics might be seen in the exam and will demand careful reading to know what the passage is all about, arguments and inferences drawn from it. Given below are the topics asked in the RC of CAT 2025 & CAT 2024.

Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR) is the second section of the CAT question paper. There are a total of 22 questions to be attempted in 40 minutes. The section can be divided into two types – Data Interpretation (DI) and Logical Reasoning (LR). CAT 2026 will contain approximately 11 questions from each type. In the DILR section, most questions are set based on sets, where there will be 3–4 questions per set, whereas some LR questions may come as individual questions. The candidates should practice DILR regularly as it requires them to analyze data and think logically to answer the questions. The following table lists the major topics of DILR that CAT aspirants should prepare.
| CAT DILR Section | Important Topics | No. of Questions | Difficulty Level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Data Interpretation | Tables, Charts, Bar Graphs, Data Sufficiency | 11 | Easy to Moderate |
| Logical Reasoning | Blood Relations, Clocks and Calendars, Syllogism, Statements, Direction Sense, Coding-Decoding, Seating Arrangement, Sets & Caselets, Family Tree, Data Arrangement, Binary Logic, Puzzles, Assumptions | 11 | Moderate to Difficult |
| Overall | — | 22 | Moderate |
Quantitative Aptitude (QA) is the third and last segment of the CAT exam question paper. This test checks the candidate's knowledge of mathematics, calculating abilities, and problem-solving skills. Candidates need to know well about the basics of Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Number System, and Modern Mathematics. Candidates can enhance their efficiency by solving formulas, concepts, and various types of questions regularly. The following table gives details about the major topics covered under the CAT Quantitative Aptitude syllabus 2026.

A good strategy for CAT 2026 preparation would cover syllabus completion, practice, mock tests and revision. Candidates need to first finish the syllabus for CAT in an allotted period and then concentrate on developing speed and accuracy. Reading Comprehension requires practice because reading speed and comprehension are both skills that need to be developed with time. The candidate should go through different books, newspapers, articles and other material from various subjects.
Once the syllabus is finished, the candidate should spend about 2-3 months doing mock tests and sample paper solving. Question solving becomes imperative as just knowing the concept isn't enough to score well in CAT.
Standard CAT preparation books can be referred by the candidates to grasp the concept and practice questions. CAT aspirants refer to books written by Arun Sharma, Nishit Sinha, and R.S. Aggarwal among many others. The choice of books should depend upon the preparation level of candidates and they should practice questions once they have understood the basic concepts.
